Flaming Chicken Jumps Into River

Perhaps it was an odd homage to the town's poultry past, or maybe it was inspired by a stunt TV show. Whatever the reason, a teenager dressed in a chicken suit set himself on fire and jumped into the muddy waters of the Petaluma River last week.

The teenage boy-chicken jumper was unharmed in the incident.

Petaluma police, responding to alarmed calls from passing motorists, arrived at the marina at around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 22 to discover that the boy in the burning chicken suit had jumped about 10 feet from a railroad trestle into the river below while a group of his friends filmed the stunt.

The juveniles weren't charged for the exploit because, aside from being dangerous, it wasn't "really much of a crime," said Lt. Mike Cook.

However, responding officers made sure to inform parents of their children's shenanigans, Cook said.
